Independent Publishers Alliance Files Antitrust Complaint Against Google’s AI Overviews

A recent development in the tech industry has seen the Independent Publishers Alliance taking a stand against Google’s AI Overviews by filing an antitrust complaint with the European Commission, as reported by Reuters.

The complaint alleges that Google has been using web content for its AI Overviews in Google Search in a way that is detrimental to publishers, particularly news publishers. This misuse of content has led to significant losses in traffic, readership, and revenue for publishers.

One of the key points raised in the complaint is that publishers do not have the option to opt out of having their content used in AI summaries, unless they are willing to completely disappear from Google search results.

Google introduced AI-generated summaries in search results over a year ago, and despite initial challenges with accuracy, the feature has continued to grow. However, this expansion has come at a cost for news publishers, with reports of major traffic declines.

In response to the complaint, Google defended its AI experiences in Search, stating that they enable users to ask more questions and discover new content and businesses. The company also refuted claims about traffic declines, citing that changes in web traffic can be attributed to various factors and not solely to AI Overviews.
