In summary:

  • According to Tech Advisor, the May update for Google Home introduces enhanced Gemini AI features, including the integration of Nest cameras for smart home automation triggered by visual cues.
  • This update enables users to link multiple commands using natural language and establish custom triggers based on camera feeds for proactive device management.
  • Additional enhancements include the restoration of Apple Music functionality, improved Bluetooth pairing, and quicker response times. Gemini is available in Early Access across 19 countries.

The latest update to Google Home, featuring Gemini, has significantly increased its awareness capabilities.

Last October, we covered Google’s initiative to replace its Assistant with Gemini across the Nest product line. Though still in Early Access, consistent updates are turning it into a highly capable smart home assistant.

Among its features, this tool allows Nest cameras to detect activities within your home, such as identifying broken glass or recognizing individuals at your doorstep.

The recent spring update, similar to a Pixel Drop, enhances the Gemini AI assistant’s ability to initiate smart home automations based on live camera feeds.

Users can establish these triggers using natural language instructions. For instance, Google Home can alert you when it spots an orange cat at the door or switch off all lights and fans when your car departs the driveway.

Google Home updates

Beyond the enhanced camera integration, the May update for Google Home introduces several new features. Users can now chain multiple requests: as an example, you could instruct Gemini to lower blinds, dim lights, set a 20-minute timer, and play your favorite podcast with a single command.

The update also improves understanding of casual language, speeds up response times, and enhances overall reliability.

Additionally, Gemini is less likely to interrupt background music playback when instructed to stop a response. On the topic of music, Google has reinstated Apple Music functionality on its smart devices, and Bluetooth pairing has been optimized.

Gemini for Home is in Early Access in 19 countries, including the United States, United Kingdom, Australia, New Zealand, and much of Europe.

Anticipation now builds for the release of the Google Home Speaker, expected to launch in Spring 2026, as well as an announcement for a new smart display.
