Google Maps is rolling out new AI capabilities, such as a builder agent and an MCP server, to assist developers and users in creating interactive projects using Maps data and code. These features are powered by Gemini models, enhancing the overall user experience.

The builder agent is a novel tool that allows users to describe the type of interactive map-based prototype they wish to create in text format. Whether it’s generating a Street View tour of a city, visualizing real-time weather in a specific region, or listing pet-friendly hotels, the builder agent can automatically generate the required code. Users can then export the code, test the project using their API keys, or make modifications in Firebase Studio.

Moreover, the builder agent includes a styling tool that enables users to customize their maps according to specific color schemes or themes, catering to individual preferences and brand requirements.

Google is also introducing Grounding Lite, a feature that allows developers to ground their AI models using the Model Context Protocol (MCP). This enables AI assistants to connect to external data sources, providing users with valuable information such as the nearest grocery store’s distance. Additionally, the company is launching Contextual View, a low-code Google Maps component that offers visual representations for user queries, such as displaying a list, map view, or 3D representation as responses.

Furthermore, Google is unveiling a code assistant toolkit, the MCP server, which integrates with Google Maps’ documentation. This toolkit assists developers in accessing information on how to utilize the Google Maps API and data effectively. With the recent launch of extensions for Gemini’s command line tool, developers now have enhanced access to Maps data.

On the consumer side, Google is working on introducing more Gemini-powered features for Maps. Hands-free navigation with Gemini was recently enabled, providing users with a seamless experience. Additionally, incident alerts and speed limit data have been added to the Maps app in select areas in India, enhancing the overall navigation experience.

In conclusion, Google Maps continues to innovate with advanced AI features, empowering developers and users to create interactive projects and access valuable information seamlessly. The integration of Gemini models and tools like the builder agent and MCP server showcases Google’s commitment to enhancing the Maps platform for users worldwide.
