Google Pixel 8a VS Xiaomi 14T: Which Is a Better Buy?

When it comes to choosing the right phone, the decision can be tough with so many competitive models on the market. Two mid-range phones that stand out are the Google Pixel 8a and Xiaomi 14T, both offering a balance of affordability and premium features. While they both aim to provide flagship-level performance at a reduced price, they cater to slightly different user needs. Let’s compare them in various aspects.

### Design and Build Quality

The Pixel 8a maintains the iconic Google phone aesthetic with its camera bar design. Despite being a plastic-backed phone, it feels premium with its compact size, lighter weight of 188g, and IP67 certification for durability. However, the thick bezel around the display gives it a slightly dated look.

On the other hand, the Xiaomi 14T features a more refined design with a frosted glass back and aluminium-effect plastic frame. Weighing 195g, it is larger but remains slim and comfortable to hold. The symmetrical, slim bezels and IP68 rating add to its premium appeal, making it stylish and durable. The Xiaomi 14T edges out the Pixel 8a with its sleeker build and higher water and dust resistance.

### Displays

The Pixel 8a sports a 6.1-inch OLED screen with a 120Hz refresh rate and a peak brightness of 2000 nits. While it delivers vibrant colors, excellent contrast, and high brightness, the thick bezel detracts from the immersive viewing experience. The stereo speakers provide decent audio quality for a mid-range phone.

In comparison, the Xiaomi 14T boasts a larger 6.67-inch AMOLED display with a 144Hz refresh rate and an impressive peak brightness of 4000 nits. Ideal for HDR content and gaming, it offers smoother visuals and better outdoor visibility. The stereo speakers also deliver good clarity, although the bass lacks depth compared to higher-end models. With a larger, faster, and brighter display, the Xiaomi 14T provides a superior visual experience.

### Cameras

The Pixel 8a features a 64MP main camera, a 13MP ultrawide, and a 13MP selfie shooter, excelling in various lighting conditions. Features like Night Sight and Magic Eraser enhance creative photography, and the software ensures consistently excellent results, especially in low light. While it lacks a pro mode, the Pixel 8a is one of the best point-and-shoot options in its class.

On the other hand, the Xiaomi 14T offers a versatile triple camera setup with a 50MP main lens, a 50MP 2x telephoto, and a 12MP ultrawide. The Leica partnership brings creative filters and color profiles to enhance the photographic experience. Daylight shots are vibrant and detailed, but the ultrawide camera lacks sharpness, and low-light performance falls short of the Pixel 8a. For video enthusiasts, the Xiaomi 14T impresses with manual controls and support for shooting in LOG format, adding a professional touch. Despite this, the Pixel 8a’s superior low-light performance and software-driven photography make it the better camera phone overall.

### Other Differences

In terms of performance, the Xiaomi 14T’s MediaTek Dimensity 8300 Ultra outpaces the Pixel 8a’s Tensor G3 in gaming and multitasking. The Xiaomi 14T also excels in charging speed with its 67W fast charging, surpassing the Pixel 8a’s 18W wired charging and 7.5W wireless charging. However, the Pixel 8a includes wireless charging, a feature lacking in the Xiaomi 14T. Software-wise, Google’s clean Android 15 experience on the Pixel 8a feels more polished compared to Xiaomi’s HyperOS 2, which comes with preloaded unnecessary apps.

### Price

The Google Pixel 8a starts at £499/$499 for the 128GB model, with the 256GB option available for £559. On the other hand, the Xiaomi 14T starts at £549 for the 256GB model. While the Pixel 8a offers a clean software experience, superior camera performance, and wireless charging, the Xiaomi 14T provides more storage, better hardware, and faster charging at a slightly higher price.

In conclusion, the Google Pixel 8a is ideal for users prioritizing software experience, superior camera performance, and wireless charging convenience. On the other hand, the Xiaomi 14T excels in design, display, and charging speed, making it a better choice for users valuing hardware-focused advantages. Ultimately, the decision between the two phones depends on whether you prioritize software and photography (Pixel 8a) or hardware and performance (Xiaomi 14T).
