Rep. Tony Gonzales (R-Texas) faced criticism after suggesting that Elon Musk acts as the country’s unelected “prime minister,” which he described as a positive development. During an appearance on CBS News’ “Face the Nation,” Gonzales remarked that Musk’s influence resembled that of a prime minister, despite not being elected. Despite being unelected, Gonzales argued that Musk’s voice represents a significant portion of the public’s voice.

Musk’s actions, particularly in derailing a bipartisan spending deal through social media posts, led to accusations of him being Trump’s “shadow president.” This pressure campaign ultimately forced GOP lawmakers to revise the bill to prevent a government shutdown.

While a pared-back spending bill was eventually passed, it did not include the debt limit extension demanded by Trump. Gonzales, who voted against the measure, faced backlash for his comments about Musk’s influence.

Critics, including Rep. Becca Balint (D-Vt.), expressed concerns about Musk involving himself in government spending matters without being elected to any official position. The term “prime minister” in relation to Musk was met with skepticism and disapproval by many.

Gonzales’ remarks sparked further debate and criticism, with some questioning Musk’s role in shaping government decisions without being held accountable by the public.
