A man accused of groping young women on and near CTA train stations earlier this year has been detained by a judge who called him “a danger to women in the city of Chicago.”
In February, CWBChicago reported that two Chicago-area colleges issued public safety alerts after viral videos surfaced of a man following and touching women on trains and platforms. This triggered a wave of community concern and helped investigators identify the suspect as Michael Anderson, 30.
Anderson faces charges including criminal sexual abuse, public indecency, and multiple counts of aggravated battery in a public place. These charges stem from a series of disturbing incidents that unfolded across the CTA Red and Blue Lines in February.
During a recent detention hearing, Assistant State’s Attorney Todd Kleist highlighted the role of social media videos, surveillance footage, facial recognition matches, and photo lineups in linking Anderson to the crimes. The most serious allegation involved a woman who reported being sexually abused by Anderson at the Fullerton Red Line station on February 18. The woman stated that Anderson followed her onto an escalator and forcefully grabbed her private areas over her clothing.
Judge Rivanda Doss, presiding over the case, emphasized that all of the incidents were nonconsensual and occurred in public. She stated, “You are a danger to women. I have no other choice but to find that you absolutely are a danger to females—women in general.”
Prosecutors alleged that Anderson struck five more times within days, targeting young women near college campuses. These incidents included inappropriate touching and exposure. Kleist argued that this pattern of behavior showed a clear trend of preying on young women and posed a continued threat to public safety.
Despite arguments from Public Defender Zoe Gatzimos that Anderson had no history of sexual offenses and that there had been no complaints since February, Judge Doss ruled in favor of prosecutors. She cited Anderson’s parole status on a prior auto theft case in Indiana and his criminal record as reasons to keep him in custody until trial.
Anderson is charged with a range of offenses, including criminal sexual abuse by force, aggravated battery, public indecency, battery, and trespassing. The judge’s decision to detain him underscores the seriousness of the allegations and the need to protect the community from potential harm.
This report is based on the official court transcript of the defendant’s detention hearing, showcasing the importance of accurate and thorough reporting in cases of this nature.
