Grace Van Patten shared insights about her journey in portraying the title role in Hulu’s “The Twisted Tale of Amanda Knox” after a screening of the series’ concluding episode on September 29. During her conversation with Variety‘s Selome Hailu, Van Patten discussed her connection with the complex real-life character and how this interpretation of her infamous narrative stands out.
“It’s her story. I believe that’s what differentiates it,” Van Patten explained. “She was finally given the platform to narrate her own experiences, and beyond the show and the performance, it feels significantly meaningful to help someone share that.”
The series explores Amanda Knox’s emergence as a suspect in a 2007 murder case involving her roommate while they were studying abroad in Italy. Knox faced a conviction and spent four years imprisoned in Italy before having the verdict annulled. The case drew significant media coverage, transforming Knox into a highly publicized figure.
Van Patten expressed her long-standing desire to portray Knox, a passion ignited after viewing the Netflix documentary “Amanda Knox.” She reflected, “This is a surreal full-circle moment for me. I remember being captivated by her story in the 2016 documentary and realizing that she had not been able to share her perspective, which struck me profoundly. So when this opportunity arose, I was incredibly motivated.”
Although enthusiastic about the role, Van Patten admitted her knowledge of the case was limited prior to watching the documentary. She had the distinct chance to explore the narrative through Knox’s perspective during her preparation for the role.
“I’m really grateful that I approached this project with limited prior knowledge, considering how divisive this case is,” Van Patten remarked. “People hold very strong views about it, and I appreciate that I could engage with it without any biases, forming my views based on conversations with Amanda and thorough research and viewing.”
The actress committed herself to diligent research regarding the project. “I was constantly reading, watching, and gathering information,” she noted. “But when I realized that Knox was eager to have a fully collaborative experience, I channeled my energy into forming a genuine connection with her to better understand her story. At the core, this is a human tale. It’s something we all recognize, yet it’s about a young woman who endured an unfathomable ordeal. That was my primary focus.”
Van Patten recounted her initial meeting with Knox over Zoom, recalling, “I think I blanked out from nerves and couldn’t form any questions.” However, their subsequent encounter involved a swan paddle boat in Echo Park, Los Angeles. “We spent an hour pedaling around; it was exhausting! I was out of breath while trying to ask her questions. She had her two children and her husband with her, which allowed me to understand her not just as Amanda Knox, but as a mother and wife, a young woman navigating life. That insight was invaluable to me as I prepared to portray her.”
After getting to know Knox personally, Van Patten noted her admiration for Knox’s exuberance, a quality she aimed to infuse into her performance. “To embody her spirit, I tried to tap into that childlike aspect within myself. Amanda possesses a playful, unguarded essence. Even amidst heavy scrutiny, she remained authentic—an experience I find incredibly inspiring.”
Knox played a pivotal role in the production as a collaborator, guiding Van Patten and visiting the set to ensure pivotal scenes were captured sincerely. The series chronicles the four years surrounding Knox’s case, culminating in a finale where Van Patten portrays a contemporary Amanda Knox, still dealing with the repercussions of her past.
Van Patten shared that, while the world often remembers Knox as a young college student, her portrayal in the finale reflects “the Amanda I have met and conversed with, making that version feel most familiar. There was less pressure because I could directly engage with her present self rather than solely rely on her past experiences as she described them. I truly relished the opportunity to film this final episode, which showcases Amanda’s essence and her remarkable capacity for forgiveness.”
