Texas Governor Greg Abbott issued a warning to New Yorkers contemplating a move to Texas if Democratic socialist Zohran Mamdani wins the mayoral election, threatening a “100% tariff” on such individuals.
“After the polls close tomorrow night, I will impose a 100% tariff on anyone relocating from NYC to Texas,” tweeted the Republican governor on the eve of the election.
The reason behind this punitive measure was not immediately clear, and the feasibility of implementing such a tariff remained uncertain.
Mamdani’s proposed “Tax the rich” policy has sparked concerns about a potential exodus of New York City’s wealthiest residents, with reports suggesting over 750,000 might consider leaving.
Abbott joined other GOP members in criticizing the far-left candidate before the election, cautioning voters against supporting him.
Former President Trump endorsed Mamdani’s rival, independent candidate Andrew Cuomo, just before New Yorkers cast their votes.
“Whether or not you personally like Andrew Cuomo, your choice is clear. You must vote for him and trust in his ability to lead. Mamdani is not up to the task!” Trump posted on Truth Social.
Trump also threatened to reduce federal funding to New York City if Mamdani emerges victorious.
“If Communist Candidate Zohran Mamdani wins the Election for Mayor of New York City, it is highly unlikely that I will be contributing Federal Funds, other than the very minimum as required, to my beloved first home,” Trump stated.
