In the wake of Monica Beltran’s tragic death in the premiere of season 22, Grey’s Anatomy took an unexpected turn with one character announcing a surprise pregnancy, while another decided to take time off for personal reasons.

The episode that aired on Thursday, October 16, showcased the staff at Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital dealing with their grief over Monica Beltran’s (Natalie Morales) passing, with Amelia (Caterina Scorsone) struggling the most. Meredith (Ellen Pompeo) and Maggie (Kelly McCreary) spent time together as Maggie returned to lend support to her friend struggling with the loss.

As they shared their day, Maggie stunned everyone by announcing that she is pregnant through a sperm donor, mentioning that she hasn’t yet informed Winston (Anthony Hill). Amelia, meanwhile, opted to take a sabbatical to prioritize her mental health and strengthen her bonds with her friends.

Elsewhere in the hospital, second-year residents grappled with the pressures of their advancing careers while also guiding new interns through the challenges of working in a busy hospital. Some, like Wes (Trevor Jackson), thrived in this environment, while others, like Blue (Harry Shum), struggled to adapt to their dual roles.

Meanwhile, Link (Chris Carmack) was coping with his own challenges. After a brush with death, he was eager to recover quickly, which caused tension with his wife, Jo (Camilla Luddington). Their conflict escalated into a significant argument, but Owen (Kevin McKidd) stepped in to help them navigate their issues.

Owen was also adjusting to life post-breakup with Teddy (Kim Raver), initially opting to sleep in an on-call room. By the episode’s conclusion, he transitioned to living in an airstream trailer as he adapted to this new chapter in his life.

Jules’ (Adelaide Kane) emotional journey was also explored after she witnessed Monica’s tragic end. Despite initially trying to avoid her grief, Jules found solace in Winston’s guidance, which helped her honor her late boss’s memory.

Prior to the episode, Hill, 37, shared insights on what viewers might anticipate for the upcoming episodes, hinting at intriguing storylines regarding the characters’ recovery from the traumatic blast event.

“The surviving characters will face numerous hurdles stemming from the tragedy, with each grappling with their own unique traumas. Rebuilding the hospital and moving forward will be emotionally and physically challenging for everyone,” he disclosed to Us Weekly.

“Many of us are overwhelmed by the situations in these scenes,” he revealed, praising the writers for their ability to create compelling narratives that resonate with audiences, ensuring that viewers remain engaged week after week. “I think we’re on the right track and hope the audience will respond positively,” he added.

Hill closed with a reminder that in Grey’s Anatomy, no character is perfect. “There’s always room for complexity and potential demise in any character’s story arc. We’re currently filming various plot lines that may reflect this ongoing tension, and the season is really heating up.”

Grey’s Anatomy airs Thursdays on ABC at 10 p.m. ET.
