Greyâs Anatomy heightened excitement for its season 22 launch with hints of character fatalities and unexpected developments â so who emerged unscathed from the hospital blast?
The ABC drama made its return on Thursday, October 9, diving right back in where a section of the ER was obliterated. During the previous visit to Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital, Piper Perabo portrayed a mother of a patient who introduced a dangerously flammable acetylene tank into the surgery room, compelling Amelia (Caterina Scorsone) to conduct a perilous surgery to save her daughter.
This hostage crisis endangered interns Simone (Alexis Floyd) and Adams (Niko Terho) â along with all personnel within the hospital. Despite the success of the surgery, an accident with the tank allowed its volatile contents to spill into the operating area. The season finale concluded with an explosion, claiming only Meredith (Ellen Pompeo) and Warren (Jason George) as confirmed survivors.
Greyâs Anatomy didnât keep Us in suspense for long regarding the destinies of key characters. Besides Meredith and Warren, Miranda (Chandra Wilson) was unharmed after her presence on the surgical floor. Richard (James Pickens Jr.), Teddy (Kim Raver), and her husband Owen (Kevin McKidd) were also safe.
Nora (Floriana Lima), on the other hand, encountered a health scare with only Blue (Harry Shum Jr.) and Adams (Niko Terho) available for medical aid. They managed to stabilize her, but Adamsâ optimism was short-lived as Simone (Alexis Floyd) revealed she had slept with someone else, leading to their breakup.
Meanwhile, Winston (Anthony Hill) was safe â alongside Amelia (Caterina Scorsone). Jules, trapped on the floor, had to perform surgery on a young boy with assistance from Beltran (Natalie Morales).
Jules successfully saved the child, but sadly, Beltran succumbed after the procedure. Link (Chris Carmack) faced dire circumstances, trapped beneath debris, requiring coworkers to creatively extract him to an operating table while he bled profusely.
Although Link emerged alive, he was in a daze when his wife, Jo (Camilla Luddington), arrived at his side. This concluded the casualty tally at one, despite fansâ concerns that Greyâs Anatomy might embrace a significant bloodshed in the aftermath of the hospital explosion.
âIâve had dialogues with some of the cast, who are well aware itâs a Greyâs Anatomy cliffhanger, and they recognize that every season brings unexpected twists. They embrace it. They prefer to keep our narratives compelling and dynamic,â showrunner Meg Marinis stated in a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter. âYet, as we witnessed this year, budget constraints mandated a reduction in cast size over the last two seasons, generating strong sentiments regarding beloved characters.â
She added, âIf we can evoke strong emotions from our writers, it’s an indication that weâre heading in the right direction. A narrative becomes less fulfilling if audiences arenât moved when a character departs. Itâs designed to elicit feelings, and there will certainly be debates. However, I’m open to revision when warranted.â
Greyâs Anatomy airs Thursdays at 10 p.m. ET on ABC, with episodes available for streaming on Hulu the following day.
