These findings suggest a dynamic interplay between environmental factors shaping the Gulf of Maine’s ecosystem.

As the summer months progress, the warming trend becomes more pronounced. May sees the surface temperatures begin to rise, with warmer waters indicated by lighter shades of blue. Dr. Moir notes that rising air temperatures alone do not account for the warming of surface waters. Instead, he highlights the importance of inland heat severity, which has increased significantly from 2019 to 2023, contributing to the Gulf of Maine’s heat absorption.

By June, surface temperatures in the Gulf of Maine continue to warm, with temperatures reaching 65 degrees F near the shore. By slowing down the flow of water, more water can infiltrate into the land, promoting the growth of green vegetation and restoring healthy soils. This, in turn, helps draw down carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, ultimately preventing the Gulf of Maine from heating faster than 97% of the world’s oceans.
