A Chicago man is set to serve a lengthy prison sentence for a carjacking incident involving a grandmother and her 6-year-old grandson during a shopping trip to a South Side grocery store.
Nineteen-year-old Keshawn Gilmore admitted guilt to armed robbery and received an 18-year prison sentence from Judge William Gamboney on Tuesday, as per court records. He is expected to be released after completing half of the sentence, benefiting from various sentencing credits.
The incident occurred on June 8, 2025, in the Aldi parking lot at 620 West 63rd Street. According to prosecutors, a 66-year-old woman, accompanied by her grandson, had just taken her purse from the trunk of her black 2024 Buick SUV. As they headed toward the store entrance, Gilmore allegedly confronted them with a black handgun.
Prosecutors stated that Gilmore demanded the car keys and struggled with the woman before fleeing in the SUV. Surveillance cameras captured the entire incident.
An hour later, the stolen vehicle was detected by license plate readers on the Dan Ryan Expressway, and Chicago police found the SUV 30 minutes later near 19th Street and Albany Avenue. When officers attempted to stop the vehicle, Gilmore reportedly sped through red lights and stop signs. The chase ended after approximately two minutes when the SUV crashed on the 3200 block of South Kedzie Avenue. A juvenile passenger was ejected from the back seat during the crash, prosecutors reported.
Police apprehended Gilmore nearby. Prosecutors noted that he was still wearing the same clothes seen in the Aldi carjacking footage. A Glock handgun was found on the driver’s floorboard of the SUV, and a second handgun was recovered from the passenger side, according to prosecutors.
Under Illinois law, Gilmore will receive day-for-day sentencing credit, reducing his 18-year sentence to nine years with good behavior. He will also get an additional 375 days of credit for time served in the Cook County jail while the case was in progress.
