Def Con, a renowned hacking conference, recently made headlines by announcing the banning of three individuals linked to Jeffrey Epstein from attending their event. Pablos Holman, Vincenzo Iozzo, and Joichi Ito were added to the public list of banned individuals due to their association with Epstein, as revealed in the Department of Justice’s latest release of files related to the investigation of the late investor and convicted sex offender.

The decision to ban these individuals was further supported by an article in Politico, which highlighted emails exchanged between the trio and Epstein. While Joan Vollero, a spokesperson for Iozzo, dismissed Def Con’s actions as performative, stating that Iozzo had minimal attendance at the conference over the past two decades, the move reflects a growing trend of distancing from individuals connected to Epstein.

Iozzo, a cybersecurity industry veteran and the founder of identity startup SlashID, had interactions with Epstein between 2014 and 2018. Despite stating that his discussions with Epstein were limited to business opportunities and technology, Iozzo’s ties to the convicted sex offender led to his removal from the official review boards of cybersecurity conferences Black Hat and Code Blue.

Joichi Ito, the former director of the MIT Media Lab, resigned in 2019 amid reports of his knowledge of Epstein’s criminal history and extensive relationships with the sex offender. Holman, a general partner at venture capital firm Deep Future, was also implicated in aiding Epstein in hiding negative online news stories about himself.

The revelations surrounding the involvement of these individuals with Epstein have sparked controversy and raised questions about ethical standards within the cybersecurity community. As the industry grapples with the fallout of these connections, the actions taken by Def Con serve as a reminder of the importance of accountability and transparency in addressing such sensitive issues.

Moving forward, the cybersecurity community must remain vigilant in upholding ethical standards and distancing itself from individuals with questionable backgrounds. By taking a stand against those associated with Epstein, Def Con and other organizations send a clear message that such behavior will not be tolerated in the industry.
