The sixth episode of “Hacks,” titled “Mrs. Table,” is a pivotal moment in the tumultuous relationship between Ava Daniels and Deborah Vance. After a season of bitter pranks and power struggles, the duo finally reaches a breaking point that leads to a much-needed heart-to-heart.

The episode begins with Ava scrambling to impress her actress ex, Ruby, who has been brought in as a backup guest after Cher drops out. However, Deborah sabotages Ava’s efforts by probing Ruby for embarrassing stories about Ava on live television. Ava also discovers that her own writers have been excluding her from their group chat and ordering expensive lunches on her dime. To top it off, her attempt to distract herself by hooking up with a couple ends in rejection.

Meanwhile, Deborah is dealing with her own issues, including being excluded from her daughter’s delivery and her beloved corgi being attacked. Guest star Rosie O’Donnell also points out that Deborah’s recent success may be attributed to outside help. When Ava finally snaps, quits, and drives off in a rage, Deborah tracks her down to a beach where they have a heart-to-heart.

Hannah Einbinder, who plays Ava, discusses the emotional intensity of filming the scene, describing it as a “healing” experience. She also reflects on Ava’s journey as she transitions from managing up to Deborah to managing down to her own writers. Ava’s idealistic approach to being a boss ultimately leads to her being taken advantage of, highlighting the different perspectives on leadership between Ava and Deborah.

The episode marks a turning point in Ava and Deborah’s relationship, as they both come to terms with their flaws and vulnerabilities. As they navigate the challenges of their professional and personal lives, they begin to understand and appreciate each other in a new light. “Mrs. Table” sets the stage for a deeper exploration of their complex bond and the evolution of their partnership in future episodes of “Hacks.” It allows for a lot more depth and complexity in their relationship, and it opens up new avenues for storytelling. Plus, it’s always more enjoyable as an actor to play scenes with more emotional nuance and connection. So, yes, it was definitely a relief to have Deborah and Ava on better terms moving forward.

Overall, this episode of “But Ava swings very far in the opposite direction, and it kind of backfires” delves deep into the dynamics between Ava and Deborah, exploring their vulnerabilities, strengths, and the complexities of their relationship. Through emotional conversations, impactful moments, and poignant scenes, the episode showcases the growth and development of these characters as they navigate their personal and professional lives. With stellar performances and compelling storytelling, this episode leaves viewers captivated and invested in the journey of Ava and Deborah. After a long hiatus, we were finally able to return to our favorite place, and we couldn’t have been happier. The feeling of familiarity and comfort washed over us as we stepped back into that familiar space.

One aspect of the episode that stood out to me was the juxtaposition of Ava’s romantic life with her relationship with Deborah. It was intriguing to see how these two aspects of her life intertwined and informed each other. When Ava was getting dumped and told that she wasn’t over her ex, it made me think of her relationship with Deborah. The bond between Ava and Deborah is complex and layered, almost like a romance in itself. It’s clear that their relationship is central to Ava’s life, providing her with a second chance at a nurturing connection.

Moving on to a lighter note, the representation of the Glendale Americana in this season was a refreshing sight for us Angelenos. While some may be devoted to that mall, I must confess my loyalty lies with the Century City mall. That’s where I spent my formative years, and it holds a special place in my heart. Despite my preference, I can appreciate the significance of the Americana for many people. The debate between the two malls may never be settled, but I stand by my Century City roots.

The familiarity of returning to a beloved place and the complexities of human connections were expertly portrayed in this episode. It’s moments like these that make us truly appreciate the storytelling and character development in the series.
