The aftermath of Renee Good’s shooting by an ICE agent in Minnesota has sparked a controversial claim from the Trump administration regarding what they term “absolute immunity” for its members. This notion, however, is as fictitious as the idea of a unicorn roaming the halls of Congress.

In reality, while the Supreme Court has granted certain protections to presidents concerning their official duties, this privilege does not extend to those in the Trump administration or to ICE personnel. Their actions are subject to the same legal scrutiny as any other public servants.

As Donald Trump’s presidency dwindles down to a mere three years, his administration’s attempts to assert such immunity seem increasingly desperate. Tick-tock, indeed.

During a recent press conference, House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries delivered a clear message to those in the current administration who might be clinging to the illusion of absolute immunity. His remarks emphasized the necessity of reigning in ICE, stating:

“We need to ensure that ICE operates with the same accountability as every other law enforcement agency in the country, rather than behaving as though they are above the law. They do not possess absolute immunity. The Supreme Court, unfortunately, reserved that for one individual: the president of the United States.”

“This perspective contributes to the ongoing extremism we witness impacting the American populace, but it is crucial to recognize that this immunity does not apply to anyone else.”
