A man from Chicago is facing federal charges after reportedly hurling rocks at a Border Patrol vehicle and allegedly attempting to activate the tear gas supply while apprehended in the agents’ SUV.
According to a criminal complaint, Border Patrol agents took 32-year-old Gustavo Alatriste Osorio into custody Friday morning along North Pulaski Road, where they were conducting an enforcement operation. Eyewitnesses say Osorio started recording the agents with his phone before he threw rocks at their unmarked Yukon Denali, leaving visible damage to the vehicle. Fortunately, none of the agents were harmed during the incident.
The report details that Osorio fled the scene but was apprehended when four agents managed to tackle him and secure his hands behind his back. Once inside the vehicle, he reportedly removed his shoes and attempted to dislodge the safety pins from tear gas canisters that were stored in the seat pocket in front of him. Authorities noted he kicked at the SUV’s door and shouted at both officers and bystanders, causing scuff marks inside the vehicle.
According to the complaint, an agent seated behind Osorio tried to restrain him with a seat belt, placing a hand on his shoulder in an effort to calm him and prevent further interference with the tear gas canisters. Osorio allegedly attempted to bite and headbutt the agent’s hand but was unable to do so.
