Who needs wingers when props like Saula Ma’u are on the field?
The Harbour front rower was instrumental in their 28-15 victory over Taieri in a Dunedin premier rugby match at Forsyth Barr Stadium. The Hawks dominated the Eels during scrum exchanges.
No 8 Eti Helu capitalized on an early tighthead, diving on the ball to score. The Hawks continued their strong performance with successive tightheads, leading to first five Rique Miln crossing over.
Taieri fought back, with first five Archie Body breaking free to score in the corner and blindside Thomas Bolton evading a tackle to score from close range. However, a midfield fumble by the Eels allowed Wiremu Brailey to toe the ball through and secure the winning try.
In other matches, University narrowly defeated Kaikorai 35-32 at Logan Park, Southern triumphed over Alhambra-Union 32-12 at the North Ground, and Green Island overcame Zingari-Richmond 34-19 in the late game.
