Hard-right leader George Simion emerged as the clear winner of the first round of Romania’s presidential election vote, setting the stage for a run-off against a pro-EU centrist on May 18.
With almost 99 per cent of domestic votes and over 80 per cent of diaspora votes tallied late on Sunday, Simion secured a commanding lead with 40.3 per cent of the vote, according to Romania’s Central Election Bureau. Bucharest’s centrist independent mayor Nicușor Dan followed in second place with 20.9 per cent, while Crin Antonescu, a centrist candidate representing the governing coalition, finished third with 20.4 per cent of the domestic vote. Dan also outpaced Antonescu in the diaspora vote, which is counted separately.
The election was held after the initial victory of ultranationalist politician Călin Georgescu was nullified by the constitutional court due to allegations of Russian interference. Georgescu, an ally of Simion, was subsequently disqualified from participating in the new ballot.
The cancellation of the previous election result drew criticism from the US, with vice-president JD Vance accusing Europe’s liberal elite of failing to uphold democratic principles. In response to his victory, Simion expressed gratitude to the Romanian people, while Antonescu accepted the outcome and emphasized the importance of respecting the voters’ decision.
A final vote count is expected to be announced on Monday, with nearly 1 million Romanians abroad casting their votes, largely in support of Dan or Simion. The first-round results signal a significant shift in Romania’s political landscape, challenging the mainstream alliance that has dominated the country since the end of communism.
If elected president, Simion’s leadership could potentially shake Romania’s political stability and align the country more closely with other eastern EU states that question the bloc’s values and maintain ambiguous relationships with nations like Russia.
Simion, a nationalist leader of the AUR party endorsed by Georgescu, has garnered widespread support among disillusioned Romanian voters. In an interview with the FT, he expressed his intention to bring Georgescu back into a leadership role if elected president, emphasizing the need for fair elections and parliamentary majority.
In the upcoming run-off, Dan is expected to rally mainstream forces to challenge Simion, although the latter remains confident in his ability to secure victory. With the support of former premier Victor Ponta’s followers and Georgescu’s backing, Simion aims to consolidate his position in the second round.
The annulment of the initial election outcome has plunged Romania into a political crisis amid economic challenges and security concerns in the region. As a key player in Nato’s efforts to counter Russian activities in the Black Sea, Romania faces pressing issues such as a negative credit rating outlook and the highest budget deficit in the EU.
Against the backdrop of escalating tensions, Romanian authorities thwarted a cyber attack on government websites and Antonescu’s campaign page during the election process. Despite external disruptions, the country remains steadfast in its commitment to upholding democratic values and safeguarding national security.
As Romania navigates through a pivotal moment in its political landscape, the outcome of the presidential election will shape the country’s trajectory and its place in the wider European context.
