Burglars targeted a Los Angeles influencer’s home, breaking in and causing destruction in what is now being investigated as a hate crime by the police. The incident took place on Valentine’s Day at the residence of YouTube creator Kristi Cook, known as Spill Sesh, in the San Fernando Valley.
The perpetrators gained entry by breaking through the wooden backdoor of Cook’s house and proceeded to ransack the premises, taking several items including a Buddha statue. The statue was later found smashed in the driveway, prompting concerns of intentional vandalism against a religious symbol.
The Los Angeles Police Department has launched an investigation into the incident, particularly focusing on the possibility of a hate crime targeting the religious figure. No arrests have been made thus far, and the value of the stolen items remains undisclosed.
The break-in comes amidst a concerning trend of hate crimes in Los Angeles, with the city experiencing its highest hate crime total in 44 years in 2024. While anti-Asian hate crimes decreased by 34% from the previous year, the community remains the third most targeted group in terms of race, ethnicity, and national origin-related crimes. Buddhists accounted for just 1% of religious hate crimes in 2024, with three reported cases.
As an Asian American woman, Cook has been vocal about her racial identity and the importance of representation. In an interview with Mundane Mag, she expressed the significance of being a visible AAPI voice in the influencer space. Cook believes that her presence can bring a different perspective and pave the way for more diverse voices to be heard.
The incident at Cook’s home highlights the ongoing challenges faced by minority communities in the face of hate crimes and discrimination. It serves as a reminder of the need for greater awareness and vigilance in combating such acts of intolerance.
