“Doctor Who” showrunner and writer Russell T Davies has expressed concerns about the negative impact of social media on fandoms, highlighting that opinions can often be misinterpreted on platforms like X, which he referred to as a “hate site.”
Speaking at a masterclass during Series Mania in France on Wednesday, Davies, who identifies as a devoted “Doctor Who” fan, noted that there is a tendency to equate fans with their online presence.
“I believe they are distinct. I know they are distinct, I am absolutely certain of that,” he stated. “The online voice, which can be antagonistic, thrives on X, a hate site. Hatred on this platform is expected because it is a hate site … It is mistakenly assumed that this represents the fan voice.”
Davies is familiar with confronting hostility. The latest version of “Doctor Who” introduced Ncuti Gatwa as the first openly queer Black actor in the lead role, which unfortunately sparked racist and homophobic discussions online. Davies pointed out that social media, combined with what he termed “the collapse of journalism,” has allowed these voices to gain mainstream attention.
“That’s where the risk lies, with minority opinions becoming mainstream, as they appear in newspaper articles and critics quote them,” he remarked.
While acknowledging that fans are not obligated to enjoy a show, Davies encouraged respectful disagreement. “Fandom is inventive, brilliant, and enjoyable, but it’s becoming tainted,” he commented, adding: “Turn off phones for anyone under 16, throw them away. I am quite passionate about it.”
Last year, Disney+ ended its collaboration with the BBC after two co-produced seasons of “Doctor Who.” Although a Christmas special is confirmed for this year, Davies remained silent on the show’s future and its next leading actor.
The conclusion of the latest season marked Gatwa’s exit as the Doctor and the return of Billie Piper, who portrayed Rose Tyler during David Tennant’s era in the early 2000s. Although Gatwa’s Doctor regenerated into Piper, it was not made clear if she will assume the iconic role. During the masterclass, moderator Renan Cros tried to extract more information from Davies about Piper’s future in the series, but he did not disclose any details.
“Really, good luck,” Davies said. “I just love Billie, that’s all!”
