The ‘alalā, or Hawaiian crow, holds a special place in Hawaiian tradition as an ancestral spirit that guides souls to the afterlife. Without their ‘aumakua, these lost souls are doomed to wander aimlessly, chasing after moths and crickets for eternity. For decades, the ‘alalā has been missing from the Hawaiian skies, with the last wild population becoming extinct in 2002.

Multiple efforts to reintroduce captive-born ‘alalā to Hawaii’s Big Island have been thwarted by the presence of the ‘io, or Hawaiian hawk, the ‘alalā‘s natural predator. However, a new ray of hope has emerged with the release of five young ‘alalā on the slopes of the Haleakalā volcano on the island of Maui, where the ‘io is absent.

The ‘alalā, resembling a raven more than a crow, is the most endangered corvid species in the world and one of only two corvid species known for widespread tool use. With over 50 documented calls, the ‘alalā is known as the “bird with the big voice” in Hawaiian mythology. It is an omnivore, feeding on fruit, insects, flower petals, nectar, mice, and the nestlings of smaller birds.

In Hawaiian culture, the ‘alalā serves as an ‘aumakua, functioning as a guardian, guide, and protector. According to kuʻualoha hoʻomanawanui, a professor at the University of Hawaii at Manoa, ‘aumakua often appear in dreams or visions to warn of danger or scold wrongdoing. Due to this symbiotic relationship, Hawaiians do not harm or eat their ‘aumakua, but instead, feed and assist them in times of need.

The ‘alalā population faced a drastic decline in the 1970s and 1980s due to avian malaria, invasive predators like feral cats, and habitat loss from cattle ranching. Scientists began collecting eggs from nests to establish a genetic ark in captivity. Today, over 100 ‘alalā are housed in two captive breeding centers operated by the San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance.

Reintroducing ‘alalā to the wild is a complex process, especially since the birds are several generations removed from their natural habitat. Previous attempts saw high fatality rates, with birds succumbing to malnutrition, toxoplasmosis, or avian pox. However, each setback provided valuable insights into the birds’ behavior, social bonds, and resource utilization, guiding future conservation efforts.

The five ‘alalā released on Maui are at an optimal age for learning and adapting to their new environment. Scientists aim to foster social relationships among the birds to improve their chances of survival. The power dynamics within the group, consisting of two females and three males, have already begun to emerge, with the females taking the lead.

From a young age, the ‘alalā have been exposed to native Hawaiian food sources, setting them on the path to self-sufficiency in the wild. As these young birds navigate their new surroundings, conservationists remain hopeful that this latest reintroduction effort will help restore the ‘alalā population to its former glory, ensuring the continuation of this iconic species in Hawaiian culture and beyond. A recent addition to the coursework for young crows involves antipredator training, where they are taught to recognize potential threats such as ‘io, barn owls, and house cats. This training includes associating these predators with alarm calls from adult ‘alalā. According to researcher Bailey, failure to respond appropriately during training could lower a crow’s chances of being included in the release cohort.

Before being transported via helicopter to the release site in Maui, the graduating crows received a traditional blessing from hula master Kapono‘ai Molitau. He emphasized the significance of ‘alalā as “hulu kūpuna,” or honored elders. The crows then spent several weeks acclimating in outdoor aviaries on Maui’s slopes before being released into a remote forest reserve.

Initially, food will be provided for the birds to help them adjust to self-sufficiency. Additionally, this new cohort will be equipped with tracking harnesses to monitor their movements and outcomes.

Success for this group of crows does not necessarily entail the immediate establishment of a wild breeding population. Bailey explains that success, in this case, means observing the crows utilizing the landscape effectively and ensuring their survival.

As researchers continue to monitor the progress of these released crows, they hope to witness positive outcomes that reflect the effectiveness of the antipredator training and the successful integration of the birds into their natural habitat. The Evolution of Technology: From the Wheel to Artificial Intelligence

The evolution of technology has been a fascinating journey that has changed the way we live, work, and communicate. From the invention of the wheel to the development of artificial intelligence, technology has continuously advanced and improved our daily lives.

One of the earliest and most significant technological advancements was the invention of the wheel. The wheel revolutionized transportation and made it easier for people to move goods and travel long distances. This simple invention paved the way for the development of more complex technologies and laid the foundation for modern transportation systems.

As time passed, technology continued to evolve at a rapid pace. The Industrial Revolution brought about major advancements in machinery and manufacturing processes, leading to increased productivity and economic growth. The invention of the steam engine further transformed transportation and enabled the development of railways and steamships, which connected people and goods across vast distances.

The 20th century saw the rise of electronics and telecommunications, with the invention of the telephone, radio, and television. These technologies revolutionized communication and connected people around the world in ways that were previously unimaginable. The development of computers and the internet further transformed society, enabling instant communication and access to vast amounts of information.

In recent years, the field of technology has seen unprecedented advancements in artificial intelligence. AI has the potential to revolutionize industries such as healthcare, finance, and transportation, by automating tasks and processes that were once done manually. From self-driving cars to virtual assistants, AI is reshaping the way we live and work.

The future of technology holds even more exciting possibilities, with developments in areas such as quantum computing, biotechnology, and space exploration. Quantum computing has the potential to solve complex problems at speeds that are currently unimaginable, while biotechnology is revolutionizing healthcare with advancements in gene editing and personalized medicine. Space exploration is also seeing significant advancements, with plans to send humans to Mars and beyond.

As technology continues to evolve, it is important to consider the ethical implications and potential risks associated with these advancements. Issues such as data privacy, cybersecurity, and job displacement are all important considerations as we move forward into an increasingly technologically advanced world.

In conclusion, the evolution of technology has been a remarkable journey that has transformed the way we live and interact with the world around us. From the invention of the wheel to the development of artificial intelligence, technology has played a crucial role in shaping human history and will continue to do so for generations to come. It is important to embrace these advancements while also being mindful of the potential challenges and risks that come with them.
