HBO Max is gearing up to debut a thrilling new live-action jidaigeki series titled “Song of the Samurai” on May 9. The series is based on the popular manga “Chiruran: Shinsengumi Requiem” created by Umemura Shinya, known for his work on “Record of Ragnarok” which gained global popularity through its anime adaptation. With 36 volumes and over three million copies sold, “Chiruran” has amassed a dedicated fanbase over the years, leading to various adaptations in anime and stage formats.
This ambitious production is a collaboration between three major Japanese entertainment entities: TBS, U-Next, and The Seven, known for their work on “Alice in Borderland” and “Yu Yu Hakusho.” Through Warner Bros. Discovery’s partnership with U-Next, the series will be available on HBO Max for viewers to enjoy.
Set in late-Edo period Kyoto, “Song of the Samurai” follows the legendary samurai group, the Shinsengumi, as they navigate the tumultuous political landscape of Japan. The story revolves around Hijikata Toshizo, portrayed by Yamada Yuki, a former street fighter whose bond with Kondo Isami and Okita Soji forms the emotional core of the series. Themes of loyalty, betrayal, illness, and war shape the narrative as the Shinsengumi face the collapse of the old order.
The cast also includes Go Ayano and Nakajima Kento, with Sakai Masaaki writing the scripts and Watanabe Kazutaka directing. Produced by Morii Akira, Inoue Mamoru, and Shimomura Kazuya, the series promises captivating storytelling and high-quality production values.
Japanese audiences will have a sneak peek of the series through a special broadcast event on TBS TV titled “Chapter: Youthful Days in Edo” on March 26 and 27, with episodes streaming on U-Next immediately after airing. Subsequent episodes will be available weekly on U-Next as a streaming exclusive.
James Gibbons, Warner Bros. Discovery’s president for Asia Pacific, expressed excitement for the series, highlighting its cultural authenticity and engaging storyline. U-Next president Tsutsumi Tenshin emphasized the project’s global appeal and the collaboration’s potential to showcase Japanese content to international audiences. For international viewers, local language subtitles and dubs will be available in select markets, enhancing accessibility and enjoyment of the show. Additionally, HBO Max is set to expand its presence in the Asia Pacific region on March 26, introducing its direct-to-consumer platform in new markets such as Bhutan, Fiji, and Vanuatu.
