Warner Bros. Discovery (formerly known as Turner Networks) recently held their upfront event at Madison Square Garden, where they made some surprising announcements that left the audience in stitches. The biggest laugh of the event came when the company revealed that they would be rebranding their streaming service as “HBO Max” once again, after previously dropping the “HBO” part of the name.

The decision to revert back to “HBO Max” was met with amusement from the crowd, with HBO and Max content chief Casey Bloys joking about having a drawer full of stationary from the last time around. The company embraced the change with self-deprecating humor on social media, anticipating the reactions from both fans and critics alike.

One of the other highlights of the event was the announcement of a new Discovery Channel Shark Week special called “Dancing With Sharks,” hosted by “Dancing With the Stars” alum Tom Bergeron. The show features trained divers performing dance routines with sharks, a concept that elicited large belly laughs from the audience.

Despite the absence of lengthy comedy routines or musical performances, Warner Bros. Discovery managed to deliver a lengthy presentation showcasing their hit franchises and emphasizing their presence in streaming, sports, networks, and film. The event opened with a deep dive into the success of HBO’s “The White Lotus,” followed by industry ad-speak introducing a new “NEO” ad platform.

Celebrities like John Cena and Noah Wyle made appearances to hype their respective projects on HBO Max, while first looks were shared for upcoming shows like the “Game of Thrones” spinoff and the IT series “Welcome to Derry.” Channing Dungey, head of U.S. networks at Warner Bros. Discovery, also revealed upcoming titles for networks like HGTV, ID, Food Network, and more.

While the absence of NBA content was noticeable, Turner Sports highlighted other franchises like NCAA basketball, NHL, and tennis to compensate. The event concluded with a showcase of DC content, including a new “Superman” trailer introduced by superfan Shaquille O’Neal.

Overall, Warner Bros. Discovery’s upfront event was a mix of humor, excitement, and anticipation for the future of their content offerings across various platforms. The rebranding of HBO Max and the announcement of new shows and partnerships set the stage for an exciting year ahead for the media giant.
