After receiving criticism from former NBA player Tony Allen, O’Shea Jackson Jr. stepped forward to defend LeBron James. Allen, a former guard for the Memphis Grizzlies, expressed strong views about James, particularly regarding his defensive play. Although not primarily recognized for his defense, James is capable of making exceptional plays on that side of the court.

Allen criticized James by claiming that other players often targeted him on defense. While he acknowledged James’s skill in delivering impressive chasedown blocks, Allen suggested that no one was intimidated by matching up against him.

“Yo, Bron, stop it. You ain’t never had to check nobody, bro,” Allen remarked. “Everybody had to check Bron. His biggest defensive plays are the chasedown blocks.”

Allen also highlighted James’s vocal criticism of Marc Gasol winning the Defensive Player of the Year award in 2013. James, a four-time champion, believes he deserved the award over Gasol, a three-time All-Star.

“I didn’t think not one time LeBron deserves that. If Marc didn’t get it, I should’ve got that… Every game you came in, you was the hunted. You was the guy. All you did was a couple chase down blocks a game. Name somebody that he had to lock up and get the win.”

In response to Allen’s comments on LeBron James’ defense, O’Shea Jackson Jr., the son of rapper Ice Cube, took to X to defend James. He shared several of James’s defensive highlights, countering Allen’s critique.

“Easy to find. He was robbed of DPOY that Marc Gasol year btw,” Jackson posted.

Although James has not won the Defensive Player of the Year award and is unlikely to do so at this stage, he has firmly established himself as a strong defensive player, having been named to the All-Defensive team six times.

NBA Analyst Says LeBron James Saves His Defense for the Playoffs

LeBron James has faced criticism for not consistently performing at a high defensive level during the regular season. However, he is known to elevate his defensive game during the playoffs.

NBA analyst Max Kellerman discussed James’s defensive strategy during a January episode of his podcast with Rich Paul, “Game Over.”

“He doesn’t play defense in the regular season. He’s saving his defense for high-leverage moments, right?” Kellerman noted (Timestamp at 38:25). “So if the game’s on the line, he’ll play defense. In the playoffs, he’ll play defense, especially in high-leverage moments.”

Throughout his career, LeBron James has made significant defensive plays during the postseason, including a memorable chasedown block on Andre Iguodala in the 2016 NBA Finals, contributing to the Cleveland Cavaliers’ championship victory.
