He won’t fix bail reform and drive down crime

New York Governor Andrew Cuomo has been under fire for his support of bail reform laws that have been blamed for a surge in crime rates across the state. Cuomo continues to defend these reforms, claiming that they corrected a longstanding injustice in the criminal justice system.

The bail reform laws, which were signed into law by Cuomo during his tenure as governor, eliminated the requirement for most defendants to post bail for their release. Only those accused of the most serious crimes are now required to post bail, while others are granted automatic release. This has led to a situation where criminals are back on the streets even before the completion of their arrest paperwork.

The impact of these reforms has been starkly evident in the crime statistics. Murders in New York City increased by 47% in 2020, the year the reforms took effect. The NYPD has made some progress in reducing crime rates since then, but they are still significantly higher than pre-reform levels.

The surge in crime has also had a tangible impact on businesses, with many stores now locking up merchandise even as mundane as toothpaste to prevent theft. The lack of consequences for criminal behavior has emboldened offenders to commit more crimes without fear of repercussions.

Despite the clear failure of the bail reform laws, Cuomo has refused to reconsider his position. He has instead proposed hiring 5,000 more police officers to address the rise in crime. However, this solution may be ineffective if criminals continue to be released soon after their arrest.

Cuomo’s reluctance to acknowledge the flaws in the bail reform laws has raised questions about his leadership. While he has reversed his stance on other controversial issues, such as congestion pricing, he continues to stand by the bail reform laws. It remains to be seen whether Cuomo will take action to address the concerns raised by the surge in crime rates or continue to prioritize appeasing his political base.
