Gen Xers, despite being known for their cringe-worthy moments and nostalgia for past raves, have actually had a significant impact on culture. From influential figures like Chloë Sevigny, Alexander McQueen, Winona Ryder, Naomi Campbell, and Kate Moss to the foundations of riot grrrl and zine culture, Gen X has left a lasting mark on the world.

In terms of style, Gen Xers were ahead of their time. The current trend of dressing like it’s the early 2000s can be traced back to the fashion choices of Gen X. Whether it’s slouchy jeans and layered tops or spaghetti strap dresses paired with unconventional shoes, Gen Xers set the stage for modern fashion trends. Even bootcut jeans, which have roots in cowboy culture, became a staple of Gen X fashion.

Looking back at old episodes of shows like “The Real Housewives of New York,” it’s clear that Gen Xers had a unique sense of style and attitude. They weren’t afraid to rock knee-high boots on a night out and knew how to have a good time without getting caught up in elaborate skincare routines.

While generational labels may seem arbitrary, there is value in recognizing the contributions of each group. As Gen Z and millennials debate who is cooler or more cringe-worthy, it’s important to acknowledge that every generation has played a role in shaping culture. Instead of pitting ourselves against each other, we should appreciate the diverse perspectives and influences that each generation brings to the table.
