Bree Hall stepped up when it mattered most, sinking a crucial shot with less than a minute remaining on the clock in the Tauihi semifinal. The Mainland Pouākai had been trailing by 14 points earlier in the game but made a remarkable comeback to lead 90-84 with minutes to spare.

With 40 seconds left, Hall made a clutch shot off the glass, drawing a foul and extending her team’s lead to nine points. This pivotal moment sealed the Pouākai’s 99-92 victory over the Southern Hoiho.

The Pouākai will now face off against the Whai in the final, after the Whai defeated the Tokomanawa Queens 82-76. The Hoiho, despite their strong season, came up short in the semifinal but can still look back on 2025 with pride.

Key players in the game included Claire Jacobs and Taylah Simmons, who both contributed 21 points for the Hoiho, and Paige Bradley, who recorded 11 assists. Hall had a standout performance with 20 points, while Marena Whittle led the Pouākai with 26 points and 11 rebounds.

The game started with the Hoiho taking an early 7-0 lead before the Pouākai fought back. Jacobs and Bradley showcased their skills for the Hoiho, while Dart’s three-pointer kept them in the lead.

The second quarter saw the Pouākai gaining momentum, with Zoe Richards and McKenna Dale making key plays. The home team took a 53-42 lead at halftime, thanks to a strong team effort.

As the game progressed, the Pouākai continued to build on their lead, with Whittle’s three-point shooting proving crucial. The Hoiho fought back in the third quarter, led by Simmons, but the Pouākai maintained their advantage.

In the final quarter, the Pouākai held on to secure their spot in the final, despite a late surge from the Hoiho. Dart’s three-pointer kept the game close, but ultimately, the Pouākai emerged victorious.

Overall, it was a thrilling semifinal matchup that showcased the talent and determination of both teams. The stage is now set for an exciting final showdown between the Pouākai and the defending champions, the Whai.
