A scorching heat dome has settled over the eastern United States, bringing unbearable conditions to tens of millions of people. The National Weather Service has issued heat alerts for a large portion of the country, with the situation expected to worsen in the coming days.

On July 25, the East Coast is experiencing extreme heat, with over 80 million people at risk of heat-related illnesses. As the week progresses, the southeastern U.S. will face several days of potentially record-breaking temperatures, putting nearly 150 million people in danger on July 28.

Meteorologist Bryan Jackson from the NWS Weather Prediction Center in College Park, Md., described the heat dome as a significant event for midsummer. Heat domes occur when a high-pressure system traps heat in place, leading to warmer temperatures and sunny skies. This weather pattern is slow to dissipate, making it particularly challenging for those affected.

The current heatwave is expected to last through the end of July, with the Southeastern states experiencing high humidity and soaring temperatures. Cities like Columbia, S.C., and Tallahassee, Fla., may see daily record temperatures in the low 100s Fahrenheit. The humidity will prevent temperatures from dropping significantly at night, prolonging the dangerous conditions.

According to the National Weather Service’s HeatRisk map, more than 24 million people will face extreme heat conditions on July 28 and 30, with over 30 million at risk on July 29. Additionally, more than 100 million people will experience major heat risk on July 28 and 29. Heat-related illnesses can be deadly, with the CDC reporting over 2,000 heat-related deaths in 2023.

As climate change continues to impact weather patterns, extreme heat events are expected to become more frequent. It is crucial for residents in affected areas to take precautions to stay safe during the heatwave. Science-backed tips for staying healthy in extreme heat and keeping homes cool can help mitigate the risks associated with high temperatures.

The scorching heat dome gripping the eastern U.S. serves as a stark reminder of the dangers of climate change and the importance of preparedness in the face of extreme weather events. Stay informed, stay safe, and take care of yourself and loved ones during this challenging time.
