Former Red Bull team advisor Helmut Marko has raised concerns about the possibility of Max Verstappen retiring from Formula 1. This discussion arose following the conclusion of F1’s first Bahrain preseason test in early February.

Verstappen, after two days of testing, openly criticized the new 2026 F1 regulations and cars. He pointed out that the increased electrical power in the new power units has led to a greater emphasis on energy management at crucial points during a lap. This approach, according to the four-time F1 champion, goes against the essence of a driver’s racecraft. Instead of pushing to the limit, drivers are now required to utilize lower gears in corners and harvest electrical energy under braking. Verstappen described this as not being “pure Formula 1” and likened the new cars to “Formula E on steroids.”

The dissatisfaction expressed by Verstappen regarding the new cars has sparked discussions about his potential retirement after the 2026 season. Helmut Marko recently suggested that Verstappen could potentially leave F1 to compete in GT3 or the World Endurance Championship.

In a statement to Kleine Zeitung, Marko mentioned, “It’s possible (retirement), but he’s still relatively young and could return to Formula 1 at some point. I think there will definitely be a return to 8 or 10-cylinder engines sooner or later. These will then be powered by sustainable fuels, which will also eliminate the much-criticized issue of emissions.”

Verstappen himself addressed the retirement speculation in an episode of the “Up to Speed” podcast, where he expressed his concerns about the current regulations not aligning with the longevity of his career in Formula 1. Despite this, he emphasized that he is content with his career in F1 and has other projects that he can pursue.

Looking ahead to the 2026 F1 season, Marko remains optimistic about Verstappen’s performance. He believes that Verstappen’s ability to think and drive at a rapid pace will give him an advantage, especially with the focus on energy management in the new regulations.

As the 2026 F1 season commences with the Australian Grand Prix from March 6 to 8, all eyes will be on Verstappen as he aims to secure another successful campaign. Despite the uncertainties surrounding his future in the sport, Verstappen’s talent and determination continue to make him a formidable contender on the grid.

In conclusion, while retirement rumors swirl around Max Verstappen, his focus remains on the upcoming season and showcasing his skills on the track. With the support of Red Bull and his unwavering determination, Verstappen is poised to tackle the challenges of the new F1 regulations and make his mark in the sport once again.
