In 1912, Henri Matisse embarked on a journey to Tangier, Morocco, seeking inspiration and a change of scenery. Despite a rocky start with heavy rainfall and financial struggles, Matisse found solace in the city’s lush landscapes and diverse population. His time in Tangier proved to be transformative, leading to a period of artistic experimentation and growth that would shape the rest of his career.

Author Jeff Koehler explores this pivotal moment in Matisse’s life in his book “Matisse in Morocco: A Journey in Light and Color.” Koehler delves into how Tangier provided a unique creative context for the artist, inspiring him to create nearly abstract works like “Moroccan Café” and later iconic pieces such as his odalisque paintings of the 1920s. These works were influenced by the vibrant colors and textures Matisse encountered during his time in Tangier.

While some Western artists viewed Tangier through an exoticized and colonial lens, Matisse approached the city with a focus on capturing its light and color rather than its people. However, his letters reveal a complex relationship with the local culture, with comments that could be seen as insensitive by today’s standards.

Koehler also delves into Matisse’s deep appreciation for Islamic art and decoration, tracing his influences back to his upbringing in a fabric manufacturing town in France. The author connects Matisse’s exposure to Islamic art objects at various exhibitions to his artistic development and use of pattern and color in his work.

Through Matisse’s bold brushstrokes and vivid colors, his paintings from Tangier pushed the boundaries of abstraction and flatness. Koehler follows the journey of these pioneering works from their creation in Tangier to their reception in Paris and eventual confiscation in Russia after the revolution. The author also delves into the stories of Matisse’s fellow artists, international journeys, and influential collectors like Sergei Shchukin.
