Guillermo del Toro’s Frankenstein Set to Debut After Venice Film Festival
Following its dramatic premiere at the Venice Film Festival, Guillermo del Toro’s Frankenstein is finally poised to invade both theaters and streaming platforms. The Oscar-winning director’s inventive retelling of Mary Shelley’s Gothic masterpiece is set to grace cinemas starting October 17, followed by its Netflix release on November 7.
Visually echoing the original novel as well as previous film adaptations—including the iconic 1931 film featuring Boris Karloff—this iteration charts the journey of Victor Frankenstein, the ambitious scientist whose quest for knowledge births a terrifying creature. Jacob Elordi, taking over a role that was initially offered to Andrew Garfield, will portray the creature, while Oscar Isaac assumes the mantle of the groundbreaking scientist himself.
Two trailers have already been unveiled, with the second providing an intimate glimpse at Elordi’s interpretation of the creature.
In true Guillermo del Toro fashion, the film boasts an impressive ensemble cast: two-time Oscar winner Christoph Waltz as a wealthy arms dealer who supports Frankenstein; Felix Kammerer from All Quiet on the Western Front as Victor’s compassionate younger brother; Mia Goth as the brother’s fiancé; Christian Convery portraying young Victor; and The Witcher‘s Lars Mikkelsen playing a shadowy captain, alongside Game of Thrones alumni David Bradley and Charles Dance as the story’s wise blind man and Victor’s formidable father, respectively.

Will this grand and ambitious project lead del Toro back to the Academy Awards, where he took home multiple honors for The Shape of Water? The contributions of production designer Tamara Deverell, costumer Kate Hawley, and makeup artist Mike Hill—each of whom has yet to receive an Oscar—may well position them for wins in various craft categories this year.
