Analysis of Recent Economic Developments
by Donald J. Boudreaux, American Institute for Economic Research, August 21, 2024.
President Xi and his team in China are facing challenges in the electric vehicle (EV) industry. Despite their efforts, the country lacks a comparative advantage in producing EVs on a large scale. This has led to a backfire effect on the industry due to resource diversion. While it’s possible that with more resources, China could eventually gain a comparative advantage in EV production, the current situation is not promising. Beijing’s solution seems to be providing more subsidies and protections to the troubled EV producers, funded by taxpayers and consumers.
The Impact of Declining Birthrates on Welfare States
by Ryan Bourne, Cato at Liberty, May 16, 2024.
Declining birthrates pose challenges for pay-as-you-go welfare states, leading to financial strain and concerns about innovation. Government interventions such as baby bonuses and childcare subsidies have had limited success in boosting birthrates. Financial incentives often result in “re-timing” of births rather than a sustained increase. The effectiveness of such policies remains questionable, as seen in various countries with below-replacement birthrates.
Commentary by DRH:
In a previous review, I discussed the potential benefits of increased immigration to reduce childcare costs and stimulate population growth. However, the focus on government subsidies for childcare overlooks the broader implications of declining birthrates and the need for innovative solutions to address this issue.
Challenges of Alcohol Labeling Mandates
by C. Jarrett Dieterle, Reason, August 24, 2025.
Alcohol producers face challenges with labeling mandates that fall heavily on small businesses. The complex pre-approval system for alcohol labeling creates barriers for craft breweries, distilleries, and wineries that rely on innovation and seasonal releases. Mandates could require frequent label approvals, adding time and cost burdens that small businesses may struggle to absorb.
Transition to Hybrid Vehicles Amid Regulatory Hurdles
by Joe Lancaster, Reason, August 23, 2024.
A major automaker is shifting focus to hybrid vehicles over battery-powered EVs, citing practicality and market demand. However, federal regulations from the EPA pose challenges with stringent emissions standards that prioritize electric vehicles over hybrids. The regulations could complicate the transition to hybrid technology and limit consumer choice in the automotive market.
