Hinge CEO Justin McLeod Steps Down to Launch AI Dating Product Overtone

After announcing his departure as CEO of Hinge, Justin McLeod is set to launch a new AI dating product called Overtone. Match Group, the parent company of popular dating apps like Hinge, Tinder, and OkCupid, is supporting Overtone with pre-seed financing and is expected to have a significant ownership stake in the venture.

Overtone, incubated within Hinge with the backing of Match Group, aims to revolutionize the online dating experience by leveraging AI and voice tools to facilitate more meaningful and personal connections. McLeod and his team have been working on developing Overtone over the past year to create a unique dating service that prioritizes thoughtful interactions.

This move by McLeod follows a trend among dating app founders venturing into standalone AI projects. Whitney Wolfe Herd, the founder of Bumble, has expressed her interest in using AI to create the most emotionally intelligent matchmaker. Similarly, McLeod’s Overtone aims to offer a fresh approach to online dating, particularly targeting Gen Z users who are increasingly disenchanted with traditional dating apps.

With the online dating market facing challenges such as swipe fatigue and declining subscriber numbers, apps like Tinder and Hinge have turned to AI features to enhance user experiences. While some features like AI-powered matching have shown promise in boosting engagement, others like Tinder’s upcoming Chemistry feature, which accesses users’ camera rolls, raise concerns about data privacy.

McLeod, who founded Hinge in 2011 with a focus on fostering meaningful relationships, will transition into an advisory role at Hinge as Jackie Jantos, the current president and chief marketing officer, takes over as CEO. Jantos has expressed her commitment to continuing Hinge’s legacy of innovation and authenticity, aligning with Gen Z’s preference for transparent digital experiences.

In a statement, Jantos emphasized Hinge’s dedication to intentional innovation that resonates with modern dating culture and fosters genuine connections. As Hinge navigates the evolving landscape of online dating, its focus on leveraging AI to enhance user experiences while maintaining authenticity sets it apart in a competitive market.
