It’s a sad day in Sleepy Hollow as the historic lighthouse falls victim to a group of young arsonists, causing over $100,000 in damage just a year after a major renovation.
According to Westchester County Police, four suspects broke into the 142-year-old structure in the early hours of the morning, setting parts of the museum area on fire and destroying antique furniture and books.
Local authorities have released footage of the suspects in hopes of receiving tips from the community to bring them to justice.
The lighthouse, a cherished landmark in the area, underwent a $3.4 million renovation last year, restoring its historic spotlight and interior. It is now temporarily closed for repairs.
Westchester County Executive Ken Jenkins expressed his disappointment at the unnecessary damage done to the lighthouse, which holds a special place in the hearts of residents and visitors alike.
Despite the setback, the community is rallying together to support the restoration efforts and preserve the lighthouse’s historical significance for future generations to enjoy.
