Former hockey pro Janne Puhakka, Finland’s first openly gay player, was tragically found shot to death on Sunday. The police suspect that his partner, 66-year-old veterinarian Rolf Nordmo, was responsible for the killing. Puhakka, only 29 years old, was discovered in his Henttaa Espoo home where he lived with Nordmo.

Authorities have classified Puhakka’s death as a homicide, and Nordmo was apprehended at the scene without incident. The investigation into the murder is ongoing, with more details expected to emerge in the coming days.

Puhakka had a successful hockey career, starting at the age of six and eventually playing for teams like the Blues, Espoo United, and Rapaces de Gap. He also represented the national team and won a bronze medal in the Under 18 World Championship in 2013.

After retiring from professional hockey, Puhakka bravely came out as gay, shedding light on the challenges faced by LGBTQ athletes in the sports world. In 2022, he published a memoir titled “Ulos Kopista,” sharing his personal journey and struggles with his sexuality.

The Rapaces de Gap team, where Puhakka played, expressed their condolences to his family, relatives, and former teammates. They remembered him as a kind and spirited individual who left a lasting impact on everyone he encountered.

While Nordmo has been arrested in connection with the crime, he has not yet been convicted of any wrongdoing. The tragic loss of Janne Puhakka has sent shockwaves through the hockey community, highlighting the importance of diversity and acceptance in sports.

Rest in peace, Janne Puhakka. Your legacy will always be remembered.
