Bees are often misunderstood creatures, but their importance in our ecosystem cannot be overstated. Responsible for pollinating one-third of the world’s food supply, bees play a crucial role in ensuring the growth of crops like coffee, tomatoes, strawberries, and vanilla. However, factors such as the climate crisis, habitat destruction, pesticides, and invasive species have led to a significant decline in honeybee populations in recent years.

Toronto-based artist Ava Roth is shedding light on the importance of bees through her unique and collaborative art practice. Roth embroiders intricate patterns with thread and beads within wooden frames, creating the foundation for her innovative process. She then inserts these works into her hive, allowing the bees to determine the final composition. This collaborative approach highlights the relationship between humans and nature, emphasizing the delicate balance between control and wildness.

The geometric patterns created by bees in their hives serve as inspiration for Roth’s artwork, showcasing the creatures’ remarkable abilities. Recently, Roth has been experimenting with three-dimensional structures and round frames, deviating from the traditional rectangular format associated with hives. She has also begun a new series inspired by the Japanese art of kintsugi, where bees “mend” broken pottery with their comb.

Roth’s art not only celebrates the beauty of nature but also serves as a poignant reminder of our impact on the environment. By incorporating natural materials like honeycomb, deer antler, and waxed cord into her pieces, Roth highlights the interconnectedness of all living beings. Through her art, she invites viewers to reflect on their relationship with the natural world and the consequences of their actions.
