The world of folding phones is heating up, with Asian giants Samsung and Huawei leading the charge. While Samsung continues to dominate the market with the upcoming launch of the Galaxy Z Fold 7, Huawei has faced software issues and limited global presence, hindering its impact in the Western market.

Despite Samsung’s stronghold, competition is emerging from companies like OnePlus, Oppo, and Google. However, it’s Honor that is truly pushing the boundaries with its latest offering, the Honor Magic V5. This device boasts impressive specs, being 8.8mm thick when folded, 4.1mm when unfolded, and weighing only 217g, setting a new standard for folding phones.

Having had the opportunity to experience the Honor Magic V5 firsthand, it’s clear that this phone is for those serious about hardware. The device is only slightly thicker than a regular smartphone like the Pixel 9 Pro XL, but lighter, making it a convenient choice for everyday use.

In terms of durability, the Honor Magic V5 offers an IP58 and IP59 rating, providing strong protection against water and dust. This, combined with its sleek design and powerful performance, sets it apart from the competition.

The camera setup on the Magic V5 is also impressive, featuring a three-camera system with a 64Mp telephoto camera, 50Mp main lens, and 50Mp ultrawide lens. While the final software was not available for testing during my hands-on experience, the camera specs show promise for a flagship-level photography experience.

Powering the Honor Magic V5 is the Snapdragon 8 Elite processor, ensuring top-tier performance. The device also features a silicon-carbon battery with a capacity of 5820mAh and supports 66W wired charging, offering excellent battery life compared to its competitors.

The display on the Honor Magic V5 is another standout feature, with a 7.95-inch LTPO AMOLED panel that supports Dolby Vision HDR and variable refresh rates. The external display, at 6.45 inches, provides a premium experience even when the phone is folded.

While the software experience on the Honor Magic V5 is yet to be fully revealed, the focus on hardware excellence is evident. With its sleek design, powerful performance, and innovative features, the Honor Magic V5 is set to make a mark in the folding phone market. Stay tuned for more updates on its global launch and pricing details.
