A tragic incident in Harlem has left the community mourning the loss of Excenia Mette, a beloved pillar in the neighborhood. The senseless shooting that led to Mette’s death was allegedly caused by a reckless gunfight involving Darious Smith, a 23-year-old hooligan who was out on bail in a slashing case at the time.

Smith, who was wheeled into a Manhattan courthouse wearing a white Tyvek suit, faces charges of attempted murder and criminal possession of a firearm in connection to Mette’s death. It is believed that Smith exchanged shots with another gunman, resulting in Mette being hit in the head by a stray bullet as she rushed outside to check on her grandson. Smith himself was shot in the foot during the altercation.

This tragic incident has raised concerns about the criminal justice system’s handling of repeat offenders like Smith. Records show that Smith had previously been arrested for slashing two people with a box cutter while attempting to steal e-bike batteries in June 2024. Despite prosecutors requesting bail at $50,000 cash or $150,000 bond, a judge set it at $10,000, which Smith was able to post, allowing him to be free before the trial.

Mette, affectionately known as “Momma Zee” or “Zeenie” by her neighbors, was a well-respected figure in the community. Her death has sparked outrage and calls for action to address the underlying issues that contribute to senseless violence. City officials, including Mayor Eric Adams and City Councilman Yusef Salaam, have expressed their condolences and highlighted the need for systemic change to prevent such tragedies from happening again.

Efforts to address gun violence and provide resources for at-risk youth have been emphasized by lawmakers representing the area. Assemblyman Jordan Wright and State Sen. Cordelle Cleare have called for continued efforts to get guns off the streets and invest in community programs to address the root causes of violence.

As the community mourns the loss of Mette and grapples with the aftermath of this senseless act of violence, there is a renewed sense of urgency to address the systemic failures that contribute to such tragedies. The memory of Mette, who dedicated her life to serving the community, will continue to inspire efforts to create a safer and more inclusive neighborhood for all.
