In a somewhat ironic twist, Elon Musk has suggested that the once-celebrated cryptocurrency DOGE is nearing its twilight, yet this has not deterred Democrats from delving into the labyrinth of conflicts of interest surrounding the billionaire, particularly concerning his dealings with NASA.
Our letter addresses the glaring conflicts of interest posed by Elon Musk’s unprecedented influence at NASA. Bestowed with sweeping, albeit arguably illegal, authority by former President Donald Trump, Mr. Musk has been channeling taxpayer funds into his personal ventures while simultaneously diminishing the federal workforce and essential services relied upon by American citizens. Musk’s control over a vast private enterprise, heavily subsidized by government money, raises serious questions about his ability to manage these conflicts of interest responsibly.
Furthermore, the Trump Administration’s failure to disclose Mr. Musk’s financial records obscures the full extent of these potential conflicts from the public eye. We are demanding transparency through the release of pertinent documents, as well as immediate measures to rectify this troubling arrangement that jeopardizes the principles of accountable governance. As of February 2025, Mr. Musk and his numerous companies have garnered a staggering $38 billion from federal and state contracts, loans, subsidies, and tax credits, surpassing many of his rivals in dependence on government funding.
His enterprises, spanning transportation, healthcare, telecommunications, and defense, fall under the oversight of multiple federal agencies, including the Department of Justice and the Department of Transportation, with several currently under investigation for various violations. Strikingly, Mr. Musk is not only benefiting from these taxpayer funds but is also in a position to dictate which federal contracts are retained or eliminated—a scenario that blatantly contravenes legal standards.
…
At NASA, where Musk has reaped considerable contracts and stands to gain even more, his disregard for recusal requirements and his operational control directly bolster his business interests. These evident conflicts of interest pose legal challenges that must be addressed without delay.
It appears Musk has devised a two-pronged strategy within the federal government: first, to eliminate any investigations looming over his companies, and second, to ensure a steady stream of government funding flows into his coffers.
What Musk is orchestrating raises serious legal concerns, and the Democratic investigations are merely a precursor to what could manifest should they reclaim the House majority.
