In the political theater of Washington, it’s evident that the Republican Party is grappling with a palpable fear of losing power—one that is accompanied by a striking lack of coherent strategy to mitigate that risk.
Despite holding sway over the entire federal government, Republicans opted for a self-sabotaging path, choosing not to collaborate with Democrats to gather the necessary votes in the Senate for a government funding bill.

The discontent among House and Senate Republicans stems from a precarious situation they engineered themselves: the unilateral dismantling of Obamacare subsidies. Under the direction of figures like Donald Trump, Mike Johnson, and John Thune, the party thought it clever to offset tax cuts for the wealthiest by stripping health care from millions—a plan that seems more suited for a dystopian novel than sound policy.
When Democrats decided to leverage this policy misstep to compel change, Republicans retaliated. They attempted to force Democrats into passing a continuing resolution that Democrats found unacceptable. The consequence? A government shutdown, as temperamental as it is preventable.
The Republicans’ ire escalated this past Friday during a press conference, emblematic of their frustration. Senate Majority Leader John Thune hesitated to eliminate the filibuster aimed at resolving the impasse, cautioning that to do so might return Democrats to power—presumably to usher in abortion on demand and to add two new senators from Washington, D.C., and Puerto Rico.
However, it was Majority Whip Tom Emmer (R-MN) who took the rhetoric into the realm of extremes. Beyond the party’s typical fearmongering, he proposed that the Democrats’ refusal to acquiesce stems from a singular motivation: to score political points with what he termed ‘the terrorist wing’ of their base, coincidentally aligning with a hate rally set for next week in D.C. A curious projection, to say the least.
