The play was executed with such ruthlessness, so devastatingly simple in its process, that Colorado defensive back DJ McKinney found himself hitting the turf and slamming his fist in frustration.

During a November game where CU dominated Utah, Utes tight end Caleb Lohner found himself isolated on the left side of the formation from the 3-yard line in the fourth quarter. Making a move, he cut slightly to the outside and then proceeded to shove his 250-pound backside into McKinney as if going for a rebound. McKinney helplessly flailed his arms, disappearing behind the white jersey as Lohner caught a touchdown pass. He then shot a cool glance at a peeved McKinney and casually flicked the ball away behind him.

Despite it being his fourth catch of the season, and fourth catch ever since deciding to focus on basketball after seventh grade, the Broncos selected Lohner in the seventh round of the NFL draft.

“I know I don’t have a ton of football experience, but that’s exactly why I’m playing the game – because I’ve developed a passion and love for it,” Lohner stated during a conference call with the media on Saturday.

With only four catches on tape from collegiate football and zero from high school, Lohner’s selection by the Broncos raised questions. But his unique journey from basketball to football caught the eye of the Broncos coaching staff.

Utah basketball coach David Evans, who coached Lohner, shared how everyone had encouraged Lohner to switch to football even during his high school days. Despite a successful basketball career, Lohner decided to give football a shot after transferring to Utah.

“I took the time to watch some film and take a visit there after I graduated at Baylor, and man, it’s one of the best decisions I’ve ever made,” Lohner expressed during the conference call.

After impressing at March’s Big 12 pro day and a pre-draft visit with the Broncos, Lohner’s potential as a football player was evident, despite limited experience in the sport.

“You can’t teach a 40-inch vertical to a kid that physical and tough,” said Evans, emphasizing Lohner’s unique abilities.

The pick may take time to pay off, if it does at all. But with Lohner’s dedication and athleticism, the Broncos are excited about the developmental upside he brings to the team.
