Dave Franco has recently expressed interest in potentially portraying accused UnitedHealthcare CEO assassin Luigi Mangione in an upcoming project. The 40-year-old actor revealed during an episode of Watch What Happens Live With Andy Cohen that he has not been approached about the role yet, but he is open to the idea if the right project comes along.
The internet has been buzzing with suggestions for Franco to play Mangione, with many fans and even celebrities like filmmaker Stephen Robert Morse weighing in on the possibility of a film about the 27-year-old accused murderer. Morse even mentioned that he has a documentary in the works centered around Mangione.
Mangione made headlines in December 2024 when he was arrested in connection with the murder of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson. Currently held at the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn, Mangione is facing a slew of federal and state charges, including murder, terrorism, and stalking. Despite pleading not guilty to all charges, federal prosecutors are seeking the death penalty for Mangione.
Following his arrest, social media exploded with requests for Franco to play Mangione in any future Hollywood adaptations of the case. Franco himself admitted to The Hollywood Reporter that he has never received more texts about a potential role than he has for playing the accused assassin.
Recent developments have shown that Mangione was granted a laptop in jail to prepare for his upcoming trial, which is expected to commence next year. U.S. District Judge Margaret M. Garnett ordered the Metropolitan Detention Center to provide Mangione with the laptop for access to case materials seven days a week from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Despite objections from the Manhattan District Attorney’s Office, Mangione’s lawyers successfully argued for the laptop, citing the vast amount of case materials totaling over 7 terabytes that Mangione needs to review. The laptop, however, is restricted from accessing the internet, printers, or wireless networks, and Mangione can only access information related to his case provided by the government.
As the buzz around a potential Hollywood adaptation of Mangione’s case continues to grow, fans will be eagerly awaiting any updates on whether Dave Franco will indeed take on the role of the accused UnitedHealthcare CEO assassin.
