When it comes to sunscreen, it’s important to keep in mind that nothing lasts forever. Sunscreen, like any other product, has a shelf life and using expired sunscreen can be ineffective and potentially harmful to your skin. So how do you know if your sunscreen is still good to use?

The first thing to check is the expiration date on the container. Unfortunately, not all sunscreen containers have an expiration date listed. In these cases, it’s generally safe to assume that sunscreen is effective for up to three years after the purchase date. This is because the FDA requires manufacturers to ensure that sunscreen maintains its original strength for at least three years. However, if you can’t find an expiration date and it’s been more than three years since you purchased the sunscreen, it’s best to err on the side of caution and discard it.

It’s also important to consider how the sunscreen has been stored. Exposure to heat and sunlight can degrade the effectiveness of sunscreen, so if the sunscreen has been left in extreme conditions, it’s best to replace it. Additionally, if the sunscreen has changed in color, texture, or smell, it’s a clear sign that it’s time to get rid of it.

When it comes to applying sunscreen, it’s recommended to use at least a shot glass amount for your face and body each time. This ensures that you are adequately protected from the sun’s harmful UV rays. If you find yourself going through a container of sunscreen quickly, it may be a sign that you aren’t using enough each time. In general, it’s better to be safe than sorry when it comes to sunscreen, so investing in a new bottle regularly is a small price to pay for protecting your skin.

Remember, sunscreen is an essential part of your skincare routine, so make sure you’re using it correctly and replacing it when necessary. Your skin will thank you for it in the long run.
