How math can reveal lottery fraud

On October 1, 2022, an unusual event took place in the Philippines that captured international attention. A total of 433 people won the jackpot in the local lottery by matching all six numbers drawn, which happened to be multiples of 9 when arranged in ascending order: 9, 18, 27, 36, 45, and 54. This strange coincidence raised suspicions of possible foul play and sparked discussions about the mathematical probability of such an outcome.

In a standard lottery draw, six numbers are randomly selected from a pool of 55 without repetition. The total number of possible combinations in this scenario is calculated as “55 choose 6,” resulting in approximately 29 million possible outcomes. Therefore, the likelihood of the exact numbers being drawn is 1 in 29 million, which is the same for any other combination. To delve deeper into the possibility of fraud, one needs to explore Bayesian probability, a method used by mathematician Terence Tao in his analysis of the situation.

Bayesian statistics involves working with multiple hypotheses, namely the null hypothesis (fair draw) and the alternative hypothesis (manipulated draw). Evaluating these hypotheses requires subjective judgment based on prior beliefs. Calculating the probability of the event (drawing multiples of 9) occurring under each hypothesis involves considering potential scenarios of manipulation, such as rigged numbers or a faulty machine.

One plausible explanation for the unusual outcome is a malfunctioning machine that skewed the results towards a specific pattern. However, subsequent lottery draws with no discernible pattern diminish the credibility of this hypothesis. Tao highlights the importance of alternative hypotheses meeting certain criteria, such as being generally plausible, having a higher probability of producing the event than the null hypothesis, and remaining consistent with observed events.

Moreover, the phenomenon of multiple people selecting the same winning numbers can be attributed to common patterns in number selection, such as choosing multiples of 9. The layout of lottery tickets in the Philippines, which features a diagonal arrangement of numbers like 9, 18, 27, 36, 45, and 54, could explain why many individuals opted for these specific numbers.

In conclusion, while the lottery win on October 1, 2022, may seem suspicious at first glance, a thorough analysis incorporating Bayesian statistics and alternative hypotheses suggests that the event may not necessarily indicate foul play. The interplay of probability, human behavior, and chance events underscores the complexity of assessing unusual occurrences in real-world scenarios.
