Therefore, the likelihood of the exact numbers being drawn is 1 in 29 million, which is the same for any other combination. Bayesian statistics involves working with multiple hypotheses, namely the null hypothesis (fair draw) and the alternative hypothesis (manipulated draw). Evaluating these hypotheses requires subjective judgment based on prior beliefs. Calculating the probability of the event (drawing multiples of 9) occurring under each hypothesis involves considering potential scenarios of manipulation, such as rigged numbers or a faulty machine.

One plausible explanation for the unusual outcome is a malfunctioning machine that skewed the results towards a specific pattern. However, subsequent lottery draws with no discernible pattern diminish the credibility of this hypothesis. Tao highlights the importance of alternative hypotheses meeting certain criteria, such as being generally plausible, having a higher probability of producing the event than the null hypothesis, and remaining consistent with observed events.

Moreover, the phenomenon of multiple people selecting the same winning numbers can be attributed to common patterns in number selection, such as choosing multiples of 9.
