Murder in a Small Town stars Rossif Sutherland and Kristin Kreuk are excited about the upcoming second season, which promises to deepen their characters’ romance without resorting to tired tropes like new love interests or love triangles.
In an insightful conversation with Us Weekly, 46-year-old Sutherland articulated his primary wish for the evolving relationship between Karl and Cassandra (played by Kreuk). “I understand that the show revolves around the dynamics of their relationship,” he noted. “The challenge lies in maximizing that narrative within an ultra-compact whodunit format of just 42 minutes per episode.”
Sutherland made it clear that he wanted the audience to see their relationship take the center stage in season two, sharing, “We’re working with our writers to ensure that the focus remains on them, given the limited canvas we have for storytelling.”
Kreuk, who is 42, expressed her desire to explore more of Cassandra’s character beyond her connection with Karl. “For me, it was crucial to find engaging storylines for Cassandra that diverged from the murder plots. Because, letâs be honest, a murder mystery takes up a lot of emotional bandwidth,” she clarified. “I wanted to drive the story forward and not just serve as a sidekick to Karl.”
With the second season on the horizon, Sutherland assured fans that the storyline is expected to flourish. âWe’ve successfully developed this narrative further, and there’s even chatter about a third season,” he mentioned.
Murder in a Small Town, inspired by the works of L.R. Wright, chronicles the life of a police chief named Karl, who, with his supportive girlfriend Cassandra, delves into baffling murder cases.
Having concluded season one on a hopeful note with Karl and Cassandra together, the creators aim to shift the narrative dynamics in season two, steering clear of unnecessary conflicts between the couple. Kreuk offered, “I doubt there’s a serious threat of a breakup, but they won’t glide through a series of tranquil waters either. The real challenges will arise from external pressures and differing opinions.â
Adding complexity to their relationship, Kreuk hinted at the trials they will face together: âThe outside forces will create tension, leading to some misunderstandings and emotional turmoil.â Sutherland echoed these sentiments, stating that this season will see their relationship’s endurance tested, as they navigate both personal and professional dilemmas. “They’ll tackle real-life provocations that could cause them to drift apart, which is a precarious balancing act,” he warned.
As Karl and Cassandra navigate their tumultuous yet loving partnership, viewers can anticipate a show free from the clutter of impending love interests. Kreuk, recalling her history with love triangles in past roles, expressed appreciation for this season’s focus on deeper emotional complexities rather than recycled tension-driven plots. “The opportunity to explore multifaceted emotional landscapes represents a refreshing departure from formulaic writing,” she noted.
Sutherland, too, applauded Murder in a Small Town for prioritizing a sustained and meaningful relationship over superficial plots designed to induce drama. “The series is fortunate to embrace a narrative that nurtures these foundational conversations,” he concluded.
Murder in a Small Town airs on Fox every Tuesday at 8 p.m. ET.
