Director Jason Hehir chose the title “Novak Djokovic: The Wolf in Winter” for his latest film about the tennis icon, opting for the word “wolf” to describe Djokovic’s current status. This choice reflects the resilience and longevity of Djokovic’s career, as the film, which premiered on August 20 on Prime Video, explores how the 39-year-old athlete has weathered numerous challenges. Despite winning 24 singles Grand Slam titles, more than any other male player, the film delves into other aspects of Djokovic’s life and career.
Novak Djokovic: Wolf In Winter Explores Djokovic’s Current State
The wolf symbolizes Serbia, Djokovic’s homeland, admired for its bravery and independence. The term “Winter” might describe the phase Djokovic is in, given he started his professional tennis career in 2003. With over two decades in the sport, Hehir, known for directing “The Last Dance” about Michael Jordan, emphasized that this film captures a specific moment in Djokovic’s life rather than a comprehensive biography, as his story is still unfolding.
In any long career, a winter phase often signifies a decline due to age and adversity, prompting questions about relinquishing one’s position. Djokovic frequently faces retirement inquiries, which he dismisses, maintaining that he is still capable of winning. He is currently ranked fifth globally in men’s singles. Despite losing in the 2026 Australian Open final to Carlos Alcaraz and withdrawing from the Wimbledon semifinal against Jannik Sinner due to injury, such performances would be enviable for most players.

Djokovic is set to compete in the 2026 U.S. Open, seeded fourth in the men’s singles draw starting August 30. He is ranked behind Alexander Zverev, Carlos Alcaraz, and Félix Auger-Aliassime. Except for Daniil Medvedev, the top ten players are all Gen Z. Being seeded fourth positions Djokovic well for a potential fifth U.S. Open title, as he won’t face higher-seeded players until the semifinals.
Hehir saw an opportunity to narrate the story of a sporting GOAT still dominating his field. The film examines what drives Djokovic to continue achieving, despite having accomplished more than any tennis player, and what influences his life off the court, like being a father and husband.
Hehir’s Discovery: Djokovic as ‘Really Intelligent, Really Curious’
Initially, Hehir was hesitant about the documentary, being a casual tennis fan aware only of Djokovic’s reputation for being difficult. However, as he explored the project, he realized Djokovic is an intriguing and intelligent individual. He was impressed by Djokovic’s curiosity about Hehir’s filmmaking process.
Djokovic’s Attention to Detail in Fitness and Health
Djokovic is meticulous about his fitness and diet. Hehir noted, “I never saw him consume anything that wasn’t the highest grade.” During their first meeting in Montenegro, Djokovic drank lukewarm celery juice, highlighting his disciplined lifestyle. Djokovic’s personal chef ensures he always has healthy meals, a routine that might be hard for others to follow but is routine for him.
The Routine of Djokovic’s Daily Life
Contrary to the glamorous life some might expect, Djokovic’s routine is quite ordinary. Hehir noted the absence of shocking anecdotes, describing Djokovic’s day as filled with meditation, practice, and rest.
Motivation Through Proving Doubters Wrong
Djokovic shares a trait with Michael Jordan: the drive to prove skeptics wrong. Even with their achievements, both athletes find motivation in overcoming doubt. Djokovic thrives on silencing critics, using the Serbian concept of inat, which means persevering against opposition, to fuel his determination.
Djokovic’s Past Shaping His Present Approach
While the film doesn’t cover Djokovic’s entire life, it touches on his childhood in war-torn Belgrade and his family’s sacrifices. This background provides insight into his resilience and desire for appreciation, revealing a more vulnerable side of Djokovic not always visible to fans.
Djokovic’s Focus on the Present
The film highlights Djokovic’s ability to focus on the present, a trait common among elite athletes. Hehir observed Djokovic’s skill in maintaining concentration, even in high-pressure moments, without dwelling on past mistakes or future fears. Djokovic’s career may be in its winter phase, but he continues to defy expectations, proving himself a unique figure in tennis.
