The Future of Copper Production: How Microbes Could Solve the Shortage

As the world faces a potential copper shortage in the next few years, innovative solutions are emerging to address the increasing demand for this critical mineral. According to a recent study, without significant changes, the world could experience a shortfall in copper supply as early as 2040, with demand surpassing supply by up to 25%.

If copper prices seem high now, they may only continue to rise in the coming years. Companies and investors are already investing heavily in the sector as demand grows. For example, AI minerals startup KoBold recently secured $537 million to exploit a copper deposit in Zambia.

However, one startup, Transition Metal Solutions, believes it has found a way to boost copper production by 20% to 30% using innovative methods involving microbes. By enhancing the performance of these microbes with additives, Transition Metal Solutions aims to increase copper output and potentially mitigate the impending shortage.

To scale up this technology, Transition Metal Solutions recently raised a $6 million seed round led by Transition Ventures. Other participants in the funding round include Astor Management AG, Climate Capital, Dolby Family Ventures, and several other venture capital firms.

Microbes have long played a crucial role in the process of extracting copper from ore. However, traditional methods of using microbes to increase copper production have not always been successful. Transition Metal Solutions’ approach focuses on optimizing the entire microbial community rather than isolating specific strains, which could lead to more significant improvements in copper extraction.

By applying cost-effective and mostly inorganic compounds to ore heaps, Transition Metal Solutions has seen promising results in lab tests, with copper extraction rates reaching 90%, compared to the typical 30% to 60% achieved with conventional methods. The startup plans to tailor its additives to specific mining sites based on initial testing and aims to predict the needs of each mine as it gathers more data.

Transition Metal Solutions is now preparing to demonstrate the effectiveness of its technology in real-world mining operations. By working with a reputable third-party metallurgy lab for testing and conducting trials on demonstration heaps, the company hopes to revolutionize copper production and potentially avert the impending shortage.

With the potential to significantly increase copper extraction rates and optimize the use of resources, Transition Metal Solutions’ innovative approach could have a transformative impact on the mining industry. By harnessing the power of microbes and cutting-edge technology, the company may pave the way for a more sustainable and efficient future for copper production.
