Teresa Santos, a single mom of three, found herself in a nightmare scenario when her Airbnb account was hacked, resulting in a $2,407.88 charge to her PayPal account. Despite the hosts of the property being understanding and approving a full refund, Santos faced a frustrating battle between Airbnb and PayPal to actually get her money back.

“I was going in circles,” she told ABC 7 New York. “Airbnb was insisting that they canceled it.” Initially, Santos only received a refund of $110 due to an ongoing dispute with PayPal. The situation left Santos worried about the impact on her credit score and eligibility for the apartment she had worked hard to afford in the Stuytown neighborhood.

Account hacks, like the one experienced by Santos, can wreak havoc on your finances, credit, and overall well-being. Unauthorized charges on payment accounts are often a sign of identity theft, where scammers steal your login credentials to impersonate you and make fraudulent transactions. While account hacks are not the most common Airbnb scams, they can cause significant damage, as hackers may change login credentials to lock you out of your account and hinder resolution with customer service.

The Federal Reserve warns of social engineering and phishing tactics used by scammers to obtain sensitive information. While both Airbnb and PayPal have consumer protection policies, resolving issues stemming from account hacks can be challenging. Common ways scammers obtain login information include sending fake emails requesting verification of purchases, leading victims to unknowingly disclose their credentials.

Instances of account hacks on Airbnb have been reported by numerous users, with difficulties in resolving issues and receiving refunds on credit cards and PayPal accounts. The Identity Theft Resource Center has highlighted the detrimental impact of identity theft, with victims being more likely to consider self-harm in response. The emotional, psychological, and financial toll of such incidents can be overwhelming, with victims at increased risk of being targeted again by scammers.

In a cybersecurity incident announced by PayPal in February 2026, a small number of customers had their private data accessed by a third party, resulting in unauthorized transactions. This breach underscores the importance of taking proactive steps to safeguard personal information and financial accounts. Some tips to avoid falling victim to fraudsters include making online payments through credit cards for enhanced consumer protection, regularly monitoring transaction histories, updating passwords, and removing saved payment information from websites.

In conclusion, account hacks can have far-reaching consequences, impacting not just finances but also mental well-being. By staying vigilant, regularly reviewing accounts, and taking proactive measures to protect personal information, individuals can mitigate the risks associated with online scams. Stay informed, stay safe, and prioritize your online security to avoid falling prey to malicious actors.
