The latest episode of “Severance” Season 2, titled “Woe’s Hollow,” takes viewers on a journey outside the familiar confines of the Lumon office walls. In this episode, we see Irving waking up alone on a giant slab of ice in the middle of nowhere, eventually reuniting with fellow employees Mark, Dylan, and Helly as they embark on a mysterious work retreat organized by Mr. Milchick.

Production designer Jeremy Hindle faced numerous challenges while filming this episode, as all the exteriors were shot on location in upstate New York. The crew had to navigate changing weather conditions, with snow being a major factor in creating the snowy landscapes seen in the episode. Hindle recalls using machines to create artificial snow and ice to enhance the visuals, with a significant portion of the snow being added through CGI in post-production.

Despite the challenges, the crew managed to capture stunning visuals, including Irving’s dream sequence set in a Lumon office atop a steep mountain. The episode also features intimate character moments, such as a memorable sex scene between Mark and Helena inside a tent illuminated with a striking red backlight.

As the severed employees interact with the outside world for the first time, Hindle explains the attention to detail in showcasing their wonder and curiosity. Safety was also a priority during filming, with strict parameters set by the US Forest Service to protect the natural environment.

Overall, the production team’s dedication and hard work paid off, resulting in a visually stunning and emotionally impactful episode. Hindle reflects on the challenges faced during the filming of “Woe’s Hollow,” stating, “I practically made everyone go to the end of the world.”
