Taylor Swift is clearly infatuated with her fiancé Travis Kelce, as she pays homage to him multiple times in her latest music video for “The Fate of Ophelia.”
The most apparent tribute to the Kansas City Chiefs’ tight end comes when a cheerful Swift is seen catching and tossing a football while delightfully sliding down a hallway, singing, “Pledge allegiance to your hands, your team, your vibes.” However, three additional affectionate nods bring the total to four.
Released on Sunday, October 5, Swift’s music video showcases a dressing room door adorned with the number “87,” representing Kelce’s jersey number.
A third reference to Kelce, who proposed in a garden filled with flowers in August, is captured when Swift is seen inside the dressing room among dancers in shimmering red costumes. In the backdrop, a black and white image of Kelce is affixed to a vanity mirror.
After the release, fans flocked to social media, speculating about the origins of the black and white photo displayed in the video. According to Page Six, some theorized it was a clip from Kelce’s 2016 reality show, Catching Kelce, while others believed it might be from his guest appearance in Ryan Murphy’s Grotesquerie or even an old interview where he expressed a desire to “kiss” Swift.
A further lyrical homage occurs when Swift sings, “I heard you calling / On the megaphone / You wanna see me all alone,” a likely reference to Kelce’s attempt to offer her a friendship bracelet with his number during her Eras Tour. He recounted this amusing incident during a July 2023 episode of his podcast, New Heights.
The vibrant music video is a spectacle of glamour, opening with Swift emerging from a photograph and journeying through various historical epochs. Portraying a diverse array of characters, she showcases a myriad of outfits and hairstyles, featuring wigs from long, dark tresses to wavy, curly red locks.
The music video culminates with Swift reclining in a water-filled bathtub, echoing the artwork from the The Life of a Showgirl album cover.
Swift made a formal announcement of her new album during an appearance on the podcast “New Heights.” Seated beside her then-boyfriend, she presented a mint green case with her initials, saying, “This is my brand new album, The Life of a Showgirl.”
She went on to unveil the full track listing of the album, which includes: “The Fate of Ophelia,” “Elizabeth Taylor,” “Opalite,” “Father Figure,” “Eldest Daughter,” “Ruin the Friendship,” “Actually Romantic,” “Wish List,” “Wood,” “Cancelled!,” “Honey,” and the title track, “The Life of a Showgirl,” featuring Sabrina Carpenter.
